My Stitch {Adoption Post #7}

We've had this little person in our house now for 16 months. He's almost 21 months old!  He's going to be 2 before we know it and I'm in denial.

He loves shoes and boots and going outside. He calls cars "chaws", cows "mooes" and is awesome at saying thank you "teen-too!"

The only thing he wants my iPhone for is to talk to Siri. Over and over I hear a double beep and then "Sorry, I didn't get that." and "I'm not sure what you said.".  He says "nigh' nigh' Bye BYE!!" when we put him in his crib and he falls right asleep. It's magical.

It takes him a long time to really wake up in the mornings and he hates it when we turn on the light to soon. He's completely attached to the bear he was given by the judge on the day of his adoption and brings it with him when I pick him up out of his crib.

He runs away after I take off his clothes and tell him we need to get him dressed. And today I found him butt-naked lounging on the couch watching Cars.

He folds his arms for prayer by putting his right hand one top of his left hand, tucked up near his chin, mumbles words while we pray (like he's saying his own prayers) and says "amen!" when we do.

He loves to be chased and loves to be surprised -- to the point that he jumps. He thinks it's the coolest funnest thing ever.  He has the best belly laugh and the bluest eyes.

Bryce and I are both learning this parenting thing as we go; he keeps us on our toes! And as hard as parenting is sometimes (when he throws his plate full of home made pasta on the floor without eating a single bite, when he poops in the tub for the second time that week or when he pushes the chairs that I keep in the hall --away from the table-- back to the table and climbs up on it and stomps around the table to show that he's up where he shouldn't be......) it's the best thing that's every happened to us and we try to smile when he's naughty as we figure out how to teach him not to climb on tables and throw his food.

He's my little Stitch. I really feel like Lilo sometimes from this scene:

From Our Heart to Yours

I'm just feeling such a tremendous need to thank everyone and I don't know how to do it well enough.

God is so good. He's blessed us so much during this waiting period. He's given us amazing, kind, generous people to remind us that people are good and He is good.
(Pencil drawing, 2008)

During this very interesting and very eye-opening adoption experience, it's been hard to have faith in people. We have had so many birth moms come and go, telling us how sure they are of us and how much they want us to adopt their baby. And then they disappear. Many times leaving traces proving that they were never pregnant or never meant to place.
(And this is not just my experience. Most people I talk to who are trying to adopt- especially without an agency- have this happen numerous times.)

It makes me want to be cynical and angry and it makes me want to cry.

But then I get another text, email, fb pm or comment from one of YOU
that reminds me that most people are good, are true, are honest, are kind, are....
...amazing.

And I feel buoyed up and hopeful again,
that one day (crossing fingers it's this time!) we will come into contact with a birth mother who is
good, is true, is honest, is kind and is amazing. And I'll feel so lucky and blessed to know her.

So...

Thank you for helping us get ready for adoption.

Thank you for easing our burdens.

Thank you for encouraging us and giving us hope.

Thank you for helping me remember.

Misaotra!
(Malagasy for Thank You!)

Pushing on Doors

I try hard to keep my blog real. I want to share goodness and light and truth but I want to share my struggles--so that if anyone else feels the way I have felt (and I KNOW they have!), then maybe we can connect or maybe she can find a way to make it through another day with a little hope in her heart. Or maybe you can share with me what has helped you through what you are dealing with and it can help me.

We all have heartaches and unfulfilled wishes and struggles. And though, sometimes I wish I didn't have mine....I probably wouldn't trade mine for yours. Because I know mine is tailored to me and yours to you.

Anyway, I wanted to share a recent heartache I experienced and then share the beautiful blessing I received after the deep pit I felt myself sinking into that lifted me up and gave me hope.

In order to tell you about this day I had last week, I have to back up....Ten years. (I know...I'll try not to be long winded but that's probs not possible with this one....sorry!)

Please know, what I share here are actually several very special and even sacred experiences but I've been feeling a push to share them so....here I am being brave.

**********************
Texas, 2005:
I was Senior in HS and dating Bryce, who had graduated in 2004. I flew from where I lived in Flagstaff, AZ to visit him where he lived with his family just North of Dallas, TX.

While there, he received his mission call. It was an awesome awesome day. He was called to:
Antananarivo, Madagascar

FF (fast forward): he served his mission there for two years (2005-2007). He fell in love with the people there (I'm sure like no other missionary ever does, right? ;)

FF: one year, to 2008. Utah. I married my Malagasy-speaking HS sweetheart and love of my life.

Over the course of the next five years, trying to conceive, we talked on and off about adoption. We planned to adopt- eventually- but weren't in the position financially or emotionally to do so yet.

FF: to 2013, we had moved to Texas and were in the thick of IVF treatments.
I was plunging needles into my stomach and butt every day and popping pills and trying not to be an emotional monster. After our second round (first round, I miscarried and the second round was a failed attempt). Calling it a "failed attempt" sounds like a quick, no big deal kind of thing....let me tell you: it wasn't that.

I was as humbled and meek and tender-hearted as you can be. I felt broken and the Lord was my constant companion as I relied on him daily, hourly and sometimes minute by minute to hold onto my hope and my faith.

As I drove to work one morning, I was pondering and silently praying, again.
Adoption popped into my head. This wasn't out of the norm and I listened and waited and contemplated how and if we could make it work yet. But as I pondered, driving on Long Prairie Rd, my mind and heart caught onto the same simple thought:

I have babies in Madagascar.

It was that simple. But I knew it wasn't my own idea. It was His.
(This is a painting Bryce bought on his mission in 2006 of two Malagasy orphans)

I immediately called my husband and told him my thought and He received the same feeling and knowledge that it was right. What I didn't know in that moment was that God was just preparing us....very far in advance.

Aside from the long list of qualifications, it turned out that Bryce was still three years shy of being old enough to adopt from Madagascar. But we came to understand that this was ok and would give us time to do our third round of IVF and then get prepared financially for the $30k price tag of a Malagasy adoption.

Over the next two years we experienced another round of IVF, another heart-wrenching miscarriage, months of heart-healing and months of rebuilding my hope & faith that had worn so thin in the face of such heartache.

FF again: This brings us to 2015.
We got certified to adopt domestically to adopt here in the states because we felt it was right and good and because I often dream of a tiny baby curled onto my chest and my mother-heart wants to burst with the love I feel for that one-day baby of mine.

So a week and a half ago, we hit the 12th birth mother that didn't work out for this reason or other. (I won't even get into all of that...) But it brought me back to emailing the ONE agency in the entire USA that does adoptions from Madagascar. I've talked to them many times in the past and, again, had just been waiting for Bryce to be old enough. But he's turning 30 in March so I figured we could get started with other paperwork between now and then.....

I've learned a lot in the last few months of working with birth mothers and agencies and attorneys and social workers. So I asked this Malagasy adoption agency a question I hadn't ever asked before:

"You're a Christian agency; do you have a Statement of Faith that you require adoptive parents to sign?"

I knew they were a Christian agency. Perfect! We are Christian! We believe in Jesus Christ. We believe that he came to earth and lived and died for our sins and heartaches and disappointments and pains. We love him and strive to be like him. Our church is named after Him. We believe in the Bible and along with it, the Book of Mormon, which is another Testament of Jesus Christ.

But they sent me the Statement of Faith.  Because we believe in more than just the Bible, we cannot sign that form. If I wanted to sign it (if we want to adopt from Mada) we would have to claim to believe that no one on earth has had revelation from God since the Bible.

We cannot sign it. I cannot sign that form.

I explained that we couldn't sign it and they've already told me directly that their policy is that adoptive parents MUST sign it in order to partner with their agency.

But I have babies over there, Lord....

The day I found out that we couldn't use the one and only agency that Madagascar will deal with...the anguish of that day was on the same level with  my miscarriages.
I couldn't breathe.
I couldn't stop crying.
I prayed...loudly...to the Lord in my car as I drove.

I knew I needed someone to talk me through it so I called my Dad but he was at work and couldn't answer. So I called my sister, Jen.

As we talked and I sobbed, I had to pull off the highway and put my head my knees to keep from passing out. I was lightheaded and my arms were tingling (from lack of oxygen apparently). I was talking to her on the phone when my dad started calling me back, so she told me to talk to him.

I switched over and it took three tries to be understandable to him through my sobbing.

My babies....He told me my babies were over there, Dad. And now he's taking that away? Where is HE in this? Where is HE? I don't understand.

Dad was able to calm me down eventually. He always knows what to say...even when he tells me he doesn't know what to say....he still does.  After a bit, I determined that what I needed was a Priesthood blessing. I needed God's love and His reassurance over me. But Bryce was flying and unreachable, I don't know who my home teachers are and my father was states away.

So I called my old Bishop who lives close by and knows a lot about everything we've dealt with over the years. He came right over and Bryce actually got here at the same time. (Dad told me to imagine his hands on my head during the blessing):

I was reassured of God's love for me, of His awareness of my situation and what had happened, and that moving forward I would have angels round about me and his Spirit on my right and on my left.
Then he told me that the way was already being prepared for me to become a mother. That His plan was already set in motion and that the time is not far distant.

......I don't know why we would be told to adopt from Mada and then not allowed to do so. I don't know what His plan is for us. But I know that the right door will be opened one day for us to be able to adopt those babes. Maybe next year or in ten years. I've sent an email to the agency explaining more of our beliefs and asking if there are any other possible options. So we'll see if and what they reply with.   But in the meantime, we'll keep pushing on doors until one opens and we'll keep praying for all the little ones meant for our home -- wherever they live -- here in the U.S., Madagascar or anywhere else.

We ask in our prayers for their safety, for their health and we ask for them to be loved until we can love them ourselves.

We may not know what mountain height He will have us climb and we may not know the way through the stormy sea.

But He does.

Adoption Fundraising

As you know, we are trying to adopt!
It's been an eye-opening experience. We've been trying to adopt privately and not go through an agency. (This keeps costs between $8,000-$15,000 depending on the situation)

But as we've be contacted by birth mother after birth mother, we're realizing that doing it privately is not easy. I won't go into detail here though.

We will continue trying to adopt privately but we also frequently get contacted by agencies looking for home-study ready couples for specific situations they have. Unfortunately, those agencies all have fees ranging from
$29,000 - $40,000.

It's been heart breaking to turn down those specific situations- some with newborn babies just waiting to be adopted.

If you know my family, you know that when a family member needs help we all rally together, circle the wagons and make miracles happen.

So through the love and generosity of so many, we have SEVEN fundraisers going right now to help us with out adoption costs!

That is why I will be donating my entire 35% commission from this party to their adoption fund.

So come stop by, learn about Norwex. Make your home a Safe Haven as you help out the Davies as well!

"In an effort to do all that we can to help Cherise and Bryce welcome a bundle of joy into their family and hearts, we have set up this GoFundMe page for them.  Our hope is to relieve as much of the financial stress as we can, as they oh-so-patiently and gracefully wait for the right birthmom to pick them.
Please consider helping us help them, if not by donating, but by spreading the word by sharing this page and/or their adoption profile. The entire family - most especially Cherise and Bryce - will be ever so grateful for your kindness and generosity!

I will be donating 20% of all sales directly to Cherise & Bryce!

We have tons of scents, warmers, and other items that I will be introducing to you!

***If you are unfamiliar with Scentsy, I will give you a quick rundown:

Scentsy is an “electric candle” company. Our beautiful warmers use a low-wattage light bulb to warm over 80 different wax fragrances. No flame, no wick, no soot! Much safer than having a candle burning and the best part is that they are safe for children and pets! Our wax gets hot, but not hot enough to burn your skin in case of a spill. Our wax is a food-grade paraffin wax, meaning it is safe in case of ingestion (however, while you may be tempted to eat some of our yummy waxes, I don't recommend it). We have so many different warmers to choose from, including plug-ins. There’s something for everyone, both feminine and masculine. We offer seasonal warmers and waxes as well.

Besides our warmers and waxes, we have some other great products, too! Room sprays, scent circles (for the car), scent paks (like a sachet), scented stuffed animals, a body line called Layers, and even laundry products!***
Thanks for your support!

For the month of September, I want to have a record sales month, so that I can donate all of my royalties to help get them a little closer to covering the cost of adopting the baby that I know is waiting for them.
Will you guys help me out? Can you recommend any of my books to a friend or two? Maybe write a review and share it on social media? Can you share their story? Share their adoption profile? Can you say a prayer for them, or just wish them well?
I have a sister and a brother-in-law who want nothing more fiercely than to bring a baby into their home. Will you help us out?

Here are the links to buy them on Amazon!

My Baby Quilt

I fell in love with some fabric a few months back...
But it was way too pricey for my wallet.

But a few weeks later it went on sale and I had a few awesome coupons and voila!

I got started...

And then I got stuck for a while and busy anyway...

Then this weekend I got to get to the store for binding fabric and got to work!

I just finished!!! Bryce held it up for me like a good husband does for his woman.

He likes it.... 😉

And I'm stoked about it because I made it to match the nursery and it extra big and snuggly!

Heaven. Absolute heaven.

Rowley Family

This summer we got to have a Rowley Family reunion at my parents house! 40 people in one house...it was AWESOME.

Books for Babies

My sister is an author. She's written three fabulous books so far and is working on #4!

Last week she approached me about an idea she had to help us financially with adoption.
Her idea made me cry.

She has committed to donating ALL of her September royalties from her book sales to our adoption fund!

We couldn't believe she would do something so beautiful and kind. We sure have been blessed to be surrounded by so much love and support!!

Although we are not matched right now with a baby to come to us, it could happen at any time- it could happen tomorrow for all we know!!!! :)

So we've been trying to get ready as much as possible while we wait.

So go check out my Sister's books! You won't regret purchasing them- they're all fabulous, clean, romantic reads! Here are the links!!

To the Moon and Back

In the last two weeks we've had a couple very (seemingly) promising birth mothers contact us and had us scrambling to figure out how to pay upwards of $30k for the adoption.
Those fell through for different reasons. But since it got us thinking about finances, my super amazing family started thinking with us.

Christine and her kids (Natalie, Josh, Jessica, Melissa and Amanda) jumped right on it and baked ALL DAY last Sunday. All kids of treats and goodies and lemonade. Then spend ALL DAY on Monday selling!

How cute are they?!?! I love their signs!

And christine printed out these awesome cards that they have out to their customers as a thank you!

And finally...:all the dough they raked in!!!

They did it all as a surprise! They skyped us Monday night saying they had a surprise.

We were floored and I wanted to cry. I have the most supportive loving family I could ever ask for. The idea of these kids going to so much time and effort to help us start our family.... It touches our hearts and makes us want to cry, again! We have neices and nephews praying and fasting for us constantly as well. I just can't say how much it means to us that we have so much love and support.

So, THANK YOU Natalie, Josh, Jessica, Melissa, Amanda and Christine!!!! We love you so much! Xoxox

PS- Though we had three circumstances fall through this last week, we are currently talking with a wonderful girl who is considering adoption. We feel blessed to be in contact her and will just see where it goes!

Our Adoption Profile- PLEASE SHARE!

We're on an adventure to grow our family through
THE JOY OF ADOPTION!

Here's the link:

Any and all help spreading the word is tremendously appreciated.

We are adopting privately (not through an agency) so we have to do all our own searching/spreading the word. You are welcome to post a link on your FB, IG, Twitter or your blog! Or whatever else you can think of.

And of course word of mouth. If you know someone who is looking to place their baby for adoption and is looking for adoptive parents please please send her our way- we would love to meet her. Obviously there is no obligation in talking to us. :) We know many women who begin looking for adoptive parents haven't even decided for sure if they want/need to place their child for adoption yet. So we are open to talk to her at any point!

Thank you all for your love and support.
We've been so very blessed by each of you!

xoxo

Cherise and Bryce

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW OUR STORY:
In short, we started trying to get pregnant in November of 2008 (five months after we got married). We were so so excited to be starting our family! We have both wanted children since we were young but once we found each other those desires grew even more.
After a couple of years of hoping and praying we started doing fertility treatments. We started out small and eventually escalated to IVF (in 2012).  We were blessed to become pregnant twice through IVF but both ended in miscarriages (2013 & 2014). After three cycles, complications, hospitalizations and our two miscarriages we decided it was time to adopt.
We've loved the idea of adopting since we were dating. It's amazing how the Lord puts things in your heart long before you need them to prepare you for what's ahead.
So we got our profile up on Adoption.com in March and now we're anxious awaiting the day that we'll be contacted! Like I said above, we are more than happy to talk to any woman considering placement- with no obligation of course. We know what a big decision it is and will respect her decisions.

Thank you again for sharing and for being a part of our lives!

Sunday, July 19, 2015

Hey y'all!

While I go through our hundreds of pictures (literally) from our CO-AZ trip, I wanted to do a general update on our day to day.....

We don't own a push mower....I accidentally bought a riding mower a few years ago for $100. I'm awesome. So we use it for our yard even though it's probs overkill. I'm not very good at doing straight lines but I enjoy it anyway! And it makes Bryce proud when I do it. (PS- don't look at my weeds....I'm serious don't. Although maybe you should because they're as tall as corn stalks right now so what is in the picture is actually awesome!)

Bryce is still killin' it flying, and loving it.

We had a ton of rain, flooding and tornados in our area this spring-early summer. It was craziness. Our backyard flooded several times and twice it flooded my art studio. Lucky nothing was damaged!

One Sunday on our way home from Bryce's parents we came upon this portion of the road flooded over. The barbed wire fencing had come down completely and we didn't know the state of the actual road. I had on flip flops and I felt like it would be an adventure, so I went out to assess the road and find the fencing. We didn't want to run over it and pop a tire and we didn't want to get stuck if the road wasn't passable.

It was another pretty proud moment for Bryce. He loves me.
This pic I just found among all Bryce's photos. We've had intensely worse weather than what is shown but....here it is anyway...

A couple weeks ago our new neighbor's dog wandered onto our porch. She doesn't even look big in the pic but she's ginormous and the most friendly dog ever! Her owner was at work when she got out so we kept her in our backyard until he got home.

And last, but not least ( don't ask me why) but Bryce made sure to take this of me after I had said I wasn't hungry for dinner. He thought it was immensely funny.
